The NEWSWEEK cover of the April 24, 1961 issue featured THE VOYAGE
OF YURI GARARIN who was the first man to orbit the Earth in a spacecraft.
Contents of the magazine included a detailed description of Yuri Gagarin's
space flight. Gagarin's flight of April 12, 1961 was man's first venture into
the cosmos. Russia had won the prize of putting the first man in space.
At 5-foot 2-inches in height and 153 pounds in weight, Gagarin, indeed,
became the first space "jockey" riding his steed into the lead in the space race
with the United States of America.
