Though the astronaut pictured above, appears to be wearing a manned maneuvering unit (MMU) like the shuttle astronauts wear, he is actually wearing an extravehicular mobility unit (EMU). The objects in each of the astronaut's gloves are boxes for lunar samples rather than MMU hand controllers.
The EMU has a Primary Life Support System with an air pack and a communication assembly with a built-in radio. Astronauts working on the Moon were always in touch with each other.
