* The first recorded flight of a liquid- propellant rocket in Europe was conducted by Johannes Winkler's HW-1 (Huckel-Winkler) rocket (1931). It landed 656 ft. (200m) from its launch point.

* Vanguard 1 orbited the Earth. It was the first satellite to use solar powered batteries. Though it is expected to orbit Earth for a 1,000 years, its power system stopped in 1964. The Soviet premier made fun of its size, (6" diameter), calling it a "grapefruit," but it discovered the Earth is slightly pear-shaped (1958).
