Astounding Science Fiction (December 1951 Issue)

DISCUSSION
The spaceship featured on the above cover painting resembles jet aircraft of
the era (early 1950s). As such, the artist chose to alter the wing-tip
fuel pods making them rocket engines. The viewpoint of the scene obscures
a view of the top surface of the vehicle. Perhaps, a cockpit exists on the
opposite side of the rocket. Obviously, the craft is a rocket rather than a
jet since no air-scoops appear in the picture. Jet engines require oxygen
from the atmosphere for combustion of the jet's fuel.
